The CN Tower has been through changes the black and white pictures shows the CN Tower being built (1974/1975) this is how it looked when it was being constructed. The coloured picture shows the finished product. It has an antenna and a circular dome. The CN Tower looks different from any other building in Canada, which is one of the reasons why it attracts many people from all over the world. Many tourist visit the CN Tower because the tower draws attention just to itself, its so huge you can’t miss it. The tower is the world’s tallest standing structure. The tower measures 555.3456 metres in height. When engineers stared to plan the foundation of the CN Tower, they were “breaking new ground” in more ways than one.
This is a picture of the CN Tower in 74, I believe, you can see it being built. If you scroll down you will see another picture, this one is from 1975. At this Point it is almost done. The CN Tower was open to the public in 1976. That was 27 years ago. In 2006 it will commemorate its 30th anniversary. |
Never had anyone been faced with the task of designing a base so far into the ground and they came up against many construction challenges. After an elaborate series of test on the soil to assess the condition of the base and determine how it would respond to changes in hydrostatic pressure, they began the work. On February 6, 1973, they removed 56,234 metric tons (62,000 tons) of earth and shale before pouring a thick concrete, and steel foundation.
On August of 1974, the workers began building. The SkyPod, a seven-story building that would eventually house two observation decks, a glass floor and various technical areas. This construction in the sky involved lifting 318 metric tons of steel and wood brackets up the sides of the structure using 45 hydraulic jacks and miles of steel cable. Building the observation level, the workers bolted brackets to tensioned steel bars and they placed concrete in the wooden frames, then they placed a three-feet-high compression ring around the outside. The very last to be attached to the CN Tower was the antenna by helicopter in 1975.
